Jeremiah 33:3 (KJV)
Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

This verse, a favorite of so many, becomes that much more meaningful in its context. It must not be viewed as the verse of the exceptionally blessed. Neither ought it to be seen as the promise of all our dreams. This is a promise from Almighty God.
The writer of this verse was confined at the time in the court of the prison. His messages to the people of Jerusalem had not been well received. And it is no wonder. He’s been preaching that Jerusalem will lose to the army of Babylon, threatening them at this very moment. He’s been preaching that God sent Babylon because of their sins and that the way to be blessed of God is through surrender. No one likes his sermons.
Jeremiah 33:4-5
For thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, and by the sword;
They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it isto fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my fury, and for all whose wickedness I have hid my face from this city.
For thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, and by the sword;
They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it isto fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my fury, and for all whose wickedness I have hid my face from this city.
These are not comforting words.
- The battle with the Chaldeans will end in defeat
- The houses of Jerusalem will be filled with dead bodies and
- The God of heaven had hidden His face from them
Wow! This is terrible news!
But the promise turns quickly, Jeremiah 33:6-8
Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.
And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.
And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.
Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.
And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.
And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.
Wait. What? The fight is a route. Jerusalem will be captured. Their iniquities will be judged. But then God will turn this thing on its heels.
- Their sins will be forgiven
- Their captives will be returned and
- Their homes will possess peace
Not because they won a battle but because they surrendered. Not because they are good but because God is good
The chapter ends with a guarantee more certain than they could have ever written on their own, Jeremiah 33:25-26
Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant benot with day and night, and ifI have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;
Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, sothat I will not take anyof his seedto berulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

If the sun ever stops rising and setting. If day and night ever stops happening, then might a person wonder if God will answer this promise. Until then, keep trusting God.
