Mark 12:1-2 (KJV) Fruit

Mark 12:1-2 (KJV)
And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.
And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.
Every time I read this parable, I become infuriated with the husbandmen.
  • How could they treat their master’s servants this way?
  • How is it that any man can be so cruel to another?
  • Did they no know this would end badly for them?
And it seems to me that this is the point of the parable. Jesus said in
Mark 12:9
What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others.
But there is a second and less obvious lesson. The master of the vineyard has a right to receive of the fruit. He has a reasonable expectation to profit from the production on his property.
While we get so upset at the wicked husbandmen, do we forget that God has a right to expect fruit from our lives? We may not be guilty of beating, stoning, mistreating or killing the servants of the Lord. It might be we hear them faithfully and encourage them in their duties. Likely we, who would read this, have accepted His Son as our Saviour.  But if we have not born fruit to present to our Master, we have done as wickedly as any of these.
God has a right to expect fruit from our lives.
