Psalms 136:1-3 (KJV) Strength Through Trouble

Psalms 136:1-3 (KJV)
O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.

There are twenty-six verses in this Psalm. Every one of the ends with the phrase, “for his mercy endureth forever.”

Consider carefully and you will notice that those statements preceding the phrase outline a history filled with trouble, trial, and tribulations. God was merciful to them in the midst of these troubles. He brought them through them. He delivered them out of them, but he did not keep them from them.

I get the impression that the Psalmist was preaching to his own soul. Perhaps he was in a period of trouble, trial, and tribulation himself. Perhaps he rehearsed the mercies of God again and again in an effort to bolster his own heart and find the mercy to make it through his difficulties.

I know this Psalm has the ability to have that effect.
