And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say, The burden of the LORD, I will even punish that man and his house.
I see a bit of anthropology and some good theology bound together in this verse.
Anthropologically, there is the universal tendency of men to “hide” from God.
Adam and Eve attempted first to hide in the hedges of the garden. They next tried to hide their nakedness with fig leaves. They attempted to hide their guilt by blaming each other or the serpent.
How prone we all are to these efforts. Men try to hide from God by avoiding His house, His Word, and His people. They attempt to hide their shame through alcohol, drugs, or denial. They might try to hide their guilt by blaming their parents, or their culture, or their circumstances
Theologically we discover that God is omnipresent
No matter how we try to hide from God there is no secret place that He does not see.
Eschatologically,
In the end we will all come to face the Lord.
Soteriologically,
- Better to prepare.
- Better to be right with God
- Better to know we are hidden in the righteousness of Jesus Christ
