And thou shalt consume all the people which the LORD thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.
Deuteronomy 7:2 (KJV)
And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, andutterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:
When Israel entered the Promised Land, the Lord knew they would encounter people He said would be greater and mightier than they were. God told them,
- They were to show no mercy unto them
- They were not to befriend and join with them
- They were to have no pity upon them
This seems completely opposed to the character of God as we know Him. We have learned to view Him as loving, gracious, and enduringly merciful. The unbelieving and skeptical view passages like this and either dismiss it[1] or else despise Him for what the Bible reveals about Him. I have no problem with passages such as this because,
I know this is what our sin deserves
I sometimes think what people hate about this is not that God did it but that He did not do the same to them. It’s a form of survivor’s guilt syndrome. We know we all deserve it. Why was God merciful to us and not them? Sometimes people hate this because they have swallowed the line of the serpent and believe themselves to be gods, having the capacity to judge for themselves what is good and evil. I believe the Bible. I believe this is what sin deserves.
I view this as representative of our war with the flesh
We are to give our flesh no quarter. Sin is to be mortified, slain. We must not make friends with the sin nature. We cannot rightfully make covenants with it. It is to be destroyed so that its name is forever forgotten. Our sin nature will always be greater and mightier than we are.[2] We can only defeat it with the help of God, and if we do not defeat it, it will defeat us.
God does not eradicate our sin nature at once. It happens little by little.[3]
It’s a lifetime battle.
Don’t give up the fight.
[1] And replace the God of the Bible with that God of their imaginations.
[2] Deuteronomy 7:17 (KJV)
If thou shalt say in thine heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?
[3] Deuteronomy 7:22 (KJV)
And the LORD thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.
