Joshua 10:14 (KJV)

And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.

Many years ago, I preached my way through the book of Joshua. At the time, we had a business executive and one of his personal friends, a medical doctor, as members of our church. When I got to this passage, I said that I was aware of the arguments of various Bible scholars attempting to explain away the idea of the sun and moon standing still.

• Some arguments attempt to reinterpret the passage
• Other arguments attempt a natural explanation of the miracle

I said I was aware of these arguments and that I had rejected those arguments in favor of the plain meaning of the passage.

A few days later, the medical doctor asked to meet with me. He brought a book along and recommended I read it as it offered a logical explanation of this miracle that would be acceptable to a scientific thinker. I thanked him but told him what I said stood. I believe the sun and moon stood still precisely as the passage says they did. He told me I would never pastor educated people if I weren’t willing to consider these sorts of ways to explain away the miracles. I am content to pastor those God places in our care.

This verse, in my mind, settles the interpretation. The Bible clearly says there was never anything like this day before or after. It is without explanation. We weaken the impact of the event when we attempt to give it one.
