And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the LORD, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man’s heart to bring into the house of the LORD,
Notice that the passage describes three distinct offerings:
The money of every one that passeth the account
The Bible students say this is the shekel offering that everyone who came to the temple was to give.
The money that everyone is set at
This is the money a person had predetermined to give, say in a vow to the Lord.
The money that cometh into any man’s heart
This was a love gift given above that.
It seems to me that the first could correspond to the tithe. While the dollar amount differs for each of us, the tithe is a fixed number – ten percent. But I’ve met only a few Christians that give only the tithe. Almost all of us eventually come to where our devotion to the house of God leads us to give over the tithe. Above that, many Christians have an even greater heart for the work of God and give to things such as Faith Promise Missions. This money doesn’t directly serve the local church but goes out to missionaries around the globe.
I have observed that those who have a heart for God never quibble about whether the tithe is just for Old Testament people. They’re always looking for opportunities to give more and more to the things that belong to God.
