But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.
The contrasts of people in Antioch in Pisidia[1] is telling.
- · The Jews despised and wondered
- · The Gentiles in the synagogue invited him to preach again
Almost the whole city came to hear the next Sabbath, and many were saved. But the Jews grew envious, caring nothing for souls but only for their religion.
- · The Gentiles were glad for the Word of God so that it was published throughout all the region.
- · The Jews, seeking to thwart the momentum of the preaching, raised persecution by stirring up the women and the chief men.
It’s noteworthy how the Word of God describes those who were stirred up.
It was the women first, then the men. God leads through men.
The devil and his crowd find it much more effective to stir up the women.
These were devout and honorable women.
Devoted to the Jewish faith and held in esteem in their community. I am reminded of the matriarchal in the story of Pollyanna, who approved the minister’s sermons before he preached them.
The chief men of the city
Behind every good man is an even better woman. Were these the chief men in the city because of their wives? Were they so stirred up because their wives were stirred up first?
No matter. The disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Ghost.

Acts 13:50 (KJV) No Matter
[1] For those who may not know, there are two cities in the New Testament named Antioch on the Orontes, where the church was from whence Paul and Barnabas were sent, and Antioch in Pisidia, the location of this event.
