Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Just as God is tri-part, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,[1] man, made in His image, is tri-part, body, soul, and spirit.[2]
At salvation
- The spirit is quickened
- The soul is redeemed and
- The body is progressively sanctified
- The spirit is that part of us that reaches heavenward
- The soul is that part of us that reaches human ward and
- The body is that part of us that reaches earthward
We often claim that the soul is the mind, will, and emotions. But this is not the case. According to our text, the mind is associated with the flesh. This answers a ton of questions spiritually because logic and reason, which are attached to the mind, are the enemies of God. They are, I believe, the product of the sin nature -godlikeness- and are devilish, demonic.
The mind must be renewed according to Romans chapter twelve. This is a process of sanctification and is evidence that the mind has not been redeemed to God but, like the body, is still under the world’s claim.
The Christian must then learn to mortify the deeds of the mind just as he would those of the flesh.
- He must “think” in the spirit rather than the mind.
- He must allow the Holy Spirit to pour light into his mind.
- He must bring the mind into submission, as is taught in Philippians 4.[3]
We walk by faith, not by sight.[4] The Christian is to make decisions and choices for his life, not according to the reason of the world[5] but according to the teaching of the Word of God.[6]
[1] 1 John 5:7 (KJV)
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
[2] 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (KJV)
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[3] Philippians 4:8 (KJV)
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
[4] 2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV)
(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
[5] Which is the mind.
[6] That is faith – submission to the Spirit
