And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
I’m sixty-five years old at the time of this writing. Advances in medicine have changed things since two thousand years ago, but I commonly refer to myself as an old man.[1] Zacharias didn’t have to be eighty. He may have been around fifty. My understanding is that the priests retired from the service of the Temple at fifty.[2]
He’s by his own admission an old man. He’s just been visited by an angel and stricken dumb, unable to speak. And yet he stayed in Jerusalem and finished the “days of his ministration.”
Age has its own way of reminding us of life's journey. Zacharias felt the weight of his years, especially after his encounter with the angel. Despite his age and the challenges he faced, he remained committed to his duties in Jerusalem. That’s called character!
Life happens.
That life happens is never an excuse to quit your “days of ministration.”

Luke 1:18 (KJV) Aging with Grace
[1] And, while I can’t believe I got old so quickly, I very often feel old. A person is wise to number his days. Psalms 90:12 (KJV)
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
[2] Numbers 8:24-25 (KJV)
This is it that belongeth unto the Levites: from twenty and five years old and upward they shall go in to wait upon the service of the tabernacle of the congregation:
And from the age of fifty years they shall cease waiting upon the service thereof, and shall serve no more:
