And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
The first beast of this chapter comes out of the sea and is given power to speak blasphemies against God, His temple, and those who dwell there. Further, he is given power to make war and to overcome the saints.
It should be remembered that, although all the believers in the church age will be raptured away before this Tribulation, vast multitudes of every people will be saved during this time.
The second beast in the chapter rises out of the earth. Sometimes the sea represents the “sea of humanity.” Perhaps the first beast is a man (Antichrist), while the second comes up out of hell (a devil). The Bible says he has all the power of the first beast, plus the power to restore life to the first beast and to kill those who will not worship the image. Neither Satan nor any who follow him are able to do anything unless God permits.
Wait. What?
Am I saying that God permits them to make war, overcome, and even kill the saints of God?
Old Testament saints certainly were killed for their faith.
New Testament believers have been slain by the millions over the millennia.
No wonder Jesus was crucified after only 33 1/2 years. And we know His death was ordained before the foundation of the world.
Here’s the thing to always remember: for the believer, death is never a punishment or sign of defeat. It’s a doorway. It’s a promotion. It is the appointment of God. It is the most common means of passing from earthiness to incorruption.
If we are aghast at death, it is because we have forgotten its purpose.
