Mark 10:9 (KJV) Marriage, Sin, and the Law of Christ

Mark 10:9 (KJV)

What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder

The Pharisees asked Jesus a question about marriage, tempting Him. I suppose the Pharisees knew then, just as now, that few things will put a preacher at odds with his congregation more quickly than meddling in family affairs. But Jesus used the opportunity for a much larger lesson. He turned the conversation with a question of His own: “What did Moses command?” It was an obvious reference to the Mosaic Law in the Pentateuch. Moses wasn’t the author, only the penman. He received all that is written in those first five books under the inspiration of God. The Mosaic Law provided for divorce under certain conditions.

Jesus responded that divorce had been permitted because of the hardness of men’s hearts. It is sin that brings divorce into the family—sin. It would be ten thousand times better to remove the sin than to write the divorce.

Then Jesus elevated the conversation. He took them back to the Garden, before sin entered the world, saying, “In the beginning.” He called them to a higher standard: “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”

The New Testament is a higher standard. The Old Testament laws, far from being discredited, have been perfectly kept by Christ. His disciples, though imperfect, are no longer bound by those laws but are called to a law much higher—the law of Christ.

As Jesus told the woman taken in adultery and forgiven by Him, “Go, and sin no more.”[1]

Marriage, Sin, and the Law of Christ: The Higher Standard

[1] John 8:11 (KJV)

She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
