Take heed to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt offerings in every place that thou seest:
There are things that must be guarded:
- Because of their value,
- Because of their tendency to be lost, or
- Because of the threat of an enemy.
The phrase take heed here means to guard, as a shepherd would his sheep from a predator. Ancient shepherds often built sheepfolds out of briers at night. These enclosures prevented the sheep from wandering and made it harder for wolves or lions to break in. The shepherd could then watch more effectively.
In the same way, the Jews were commanded to guard the place where they offered their worship to the Lord. That lesson is no less important today. The place of worship must be guarded for the same reasons:
1. It is valuable.
The place of worship is no small matter. Here we meet the One who forgives our sins. Here our faith grows. Here we serve others and are encouraged while encouraging them in return.
2. It is easy to drift away.
The flesh prefers comfort, ease, and entertainment. A place closer, more convenient, or less confrontational often seems appealing. I recently heard of an educated, intelligent man who attends a Lutheran church because they “don’t preach much.” He likes the music and rituals and avoids the conviction of strong teaching. He finds it easier because there is little to disagree with.
3. The enemy seeks to draw us out.
There is protection in the place the Lord chooses. The enemy seeks to pull us away so that he may devour us. Within the membership of God’s chosen place, the pastor has a fighting chance to watch for souls, as God has called him to do. He cannot stop every attack, nor can he force the sheep to stay, but he can guard and warn as a shepherd.
So, take heed of this place. Learn the difference between “every place that thou seest” and “the place which the LORD shall choose.” When you find that place, take heed and lock into it.

Take Heed of God’s House: Not Every Place Will Do
The Bible warns in Deuteronomy 12:13 to “take heed to thyself” in worship. Not every place is the right place to worship God. The Lord has chosen His place, and it must be guarded. 🕊️
Your church home is more than a building—it is where sins are forgiven, faith is strengthened, and believers are protected from the enemy’s attacks. Satan would love nothing more than to draw you away into “every place that thou seest.”
