Titus 2:3-4 (KJV) A Little Beer Is Not All Right

Titus 2:3-4 (KJV)
The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
I heard it again just yesterday. One of the more modern type preachers, teaching on 1 Corinthians 6:19 and that our body is the temple of the Holy Ghost (don’t get me started on that – the body being spoken of is that of the assembled local church and not one Christian’s individual body), he said that we should take care of our body because it is God’s temple. He then applied that to several things:
  • Getting exercise
  • Eating properly
And then he said, “Just drink two beers out of that six pack, not the whole six pack.” At this point he laughed and said, “That’s right. I said it is all right to drink that beer. You just need to drink in moderation.”
We have before us today one of those passages that might be used to prove it is ok to drink alcohol as long as we drink in moderation. However, there are some things to take into consideration.
First, the passage refers to wine, not beer, whiskey or other forms of alcohol.Strong drink is condemned always, without exception. Beer is never referred to in the Bible. I am aware that some people claim beer and wine are of the same class. I don’t buy it.
Second, the term “not given to” means to be “enslaved by.”It is literally speaking of becoming addicted to the wine. This passage is teaching the preacher to preach that a person should not be addicted to wine.
Apparently it was considered acceptable for the aged of society in those days to be in the habit of being drunk. Maybe it was thought it cheered them in the old age or kept them warm and healthy or whatever. The teaching of the Bible was that Christians should not buy into the cultural mores of the day on such matters.
Thirdly, the clear teaching later on in this very chapter is sobrietyTitus 2:11-12 (KJV)
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
The teaching of the Bible is that a Christian ought to be clear headed and sober. There is no permission to drink a little alcohol so long as it is just a little. The current trend toward teaching such thinks is simply a means to be popular in the world. But it is a compromise against God and godliness.
