Daniel 5:22 (KJV) Judgment Comes in Both Cases

Daniel 5:22 (KJV)
And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;
The first five books of Daniel are all about his role as a wise man (counselor).
  • Chapter six is about Daniel as a politician.
  • Chapter seven and following is Daniel as a prophet.
As counselor we find him interpreting three dreams. The third is for Belshazzar. It is remarkable because of the difference in attitude of Daniel towards Belshazzar compared to Nebuchadnezzar.
The former is the one who took him into slavery.Daniel holds no ill will against him and even demonstrates love for him. A man can have affection even for leaders who do wrong so long as they are humble and learning.
The later was fully aware of God’s hand on Nebuchadnezzar.However he did not learn from it but rejected and acted against that hand of God. In this case Daniel had no tender feelings. He pronounced strict judgment.
There is a difference between the one whose wicked actions are based in ignorance and the one who knows full well how wicked his actions are. Judgment comes in both cases. But one is a discipline of love, meant to convert. The other is a judgment of wrath poured out finally upon the reprobate.
