But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.

The reason Israel wanted a king in the first place was to fight the Philistines. It was of the Philistines Goliath had come. When the strife broke out between Saul and David, the Philistines eventually received David as one of their own, believing he might help them against Saul. 

Once the Philistines killed Saul, David became king in Hebron, and a civil war broke out between him and those who had remained loyal to Saul through his son, Ishbosheth. David reigned in Hebron for seven years and six months, and the Philistines appear to have looked on as David battled Ishbosheth. But almost immediately, once David was established king of the whole of Israel, the Philistines came upon them.

John Gill says the Philistines watched the civil war expecting Israel to destroy themselves.

I wonder what sort of testimony we have as the world watches on at Christians who compromise with the world and have little allegiance to Christ seem to be at odds with the very church Christ loves? I hear antagonists of Christianity constantly claiming that they expect Christians to implode. They come from all sorts of angles. Many of them are not legitimate arguments, but some of them are. So, the world watches from the sidelines expecting Christianity to destroy itself. It won’t, of course. 

Here’s the truth. Christianity that is loyal to Christ and that which Christ loves is the only Christianity that is a threat to this world. The only Christianity this world has reason to attack is that which has sworn itself to Jesus Christ, their King.
