I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
I am impressed with the almost casual attitude our Father addresses both the iniquity of His children and His chastening of it. We live in a culture that considers chastening “cruel and unusual.” Yet, God recognizes it as normal and necessary. In so many respects it is even merciful.
A serious student of the Bible knows that there will come a time when God removes His mercy from the house of Solomon. He chastened them, sent them into Babylon, and when Jesus came, God mercifully kept His promise to David so that one from his family, not from the line of Solomon but of another son, Nathan, sits forever on the Throne.
Chastening, even the most severe, has the potential to result in great mercy.
