And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.
Though David was king of Hebron, he understood that there were some things that he could not control.
He was, in his mind, powerless against the sons of Zeruiah, Joab, and Abishai. He said they were too hard for him. Abishai was a mighty soldier. Joab was a strong leader. They were relatives as well. They were just difficult men for David to deal with.
He was also incapable of controlling the talk of people. Verse twenty-three, people told Joab that Abner had come to visit David. People knew Joab still hated Abner for killing his brother in combat. They didn’t care what David thought; they knew they could stir up trouble by telling Joab. “Loose lips sink ships.” In this case, they cost Abner his life and created a rift between David and Joab that was never fully resolved.
Joab acted on that information and killed Abner without David’s authority. The Bible says Joab and Abishai killed Abner. But those people who told them Abner had been there were just as guilty.
In David’s weakness, he did the one and only thing available to him. He committed the “doer of evil” to the Lord.
We cannot control gossipers, and some people have enough influence that we cannot stop the evil and wickedness they do. No matter how weak we feel ourselves to be, we can always commit them to the Lord and have confidence that He will “reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.”
