John 10:17 (KJV) Absolute Power, Willing Surrender

John 10:17 (KJV)

Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

It was not merely that Jesus laid down His life.

Many souls have done the same, and for many causes. Some have died sacrificially, others voluntarily, willingly, or heroically. We remember such people, and rightly so.

Jesus laid down His life that He might take it again.

The death of Christ was memorable, but His resurrection was incomparable. What was impossible for man was accomplished by the Son of God. His resurrection was not merely remarkable; it was essential. Without it, His death would have been another sacrifice remembered by history. With it, His death became the victory by which eternal life is made possible.

His resurrection sets His death apart from every other sacrifice in human history.

Furthermore, Jesus not only laid down His life; He took it up again.

He did not have to die. Being fully God, He possessed the power not only to lay down His life but also to refuse death altogether. He was under no obligation to become man. His incarnation was voluntary, and His sacrifice was willing.

Yet He also possessed the power to take up His life again. The Bible declares that the Father raised Jesus from the dead, but Jesus Himself said He had the power to take up His own life.

Here is the wonder of Calvary. The One who possessed all power willingly surrendered Himself to death, knowing He possessed the authority to take up His life again.

Absolute power in absolute surrender.
