John 13:11 (KJV) Serving Those Who Hurt Us

John 13:11 (KJV)

For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

The foot-washing event is found just this once in the Word of God. It is sometimes associated with the Lord’s Supper, although that is a bit of an assumption. There is a supper mentioned, and the timing of events places it near the same time, but the connection is not specifically given in the text.

Foot washing would have been humbling both to the doer and the recipient. Even the text indicates that. Jesus washed their feet as an example of service to others, and Peter was hesitant to allow the Saviour to wash his feet.

Jesus washed Judas’ feet.

  • Jesus, knowing they were not all clean and knowing that Judas was the one who would betray Him, washed Judas’ feet.
  • Judas, who was a thief, must have known within himself that he was not a true disciple. Judas, who surely by this time had had thoughts of betraying Jesus, sat silently as Christ washed his feet.
  • Judas ate supper beside Christ, had his feet washed by Christ, dipped sop with Christ, and left the room to betray Christ.

I’m struck with two thoughts.

First, there are people sitting next to us who may look just like Christians, behave just like Christians, and do just as Christians do, but be the farthest thing from Christian.

Second, this should in no way influence how we think of them or our behavior toward them.

If Christ could wash the feet of the very one He knew would betray Him, we can be civil and kind to those whom we suspect will do the same to us.
