I Guess We Should Sing Praises

Psalms 47:6 KJV
Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.

The Psalmist tells us four times in this one verse to sing praises to God. Makes it sound to me like we should do that.

Though nothing can be ascertained for certain, there are two very different ocassions proffered as that which spawned the writing of this Psalm:
  • One suggestion is that David wrote this Psalm on the occasion of the ark coming to Jerusalem, a moment of great celebration, for the Jews and certainly for King David.
  • The other suggestion is upon the occasion of Jehoshaphat's victory over the Ammonites and Edomites in 2 Chronicles 20.
Its prophetic message seems more certain as it speaks of Christ's coming to establish His kingdom.

The fact that we are given no clear indication of the circumstances of this admonition serves to remind me that we need no particular circumstances to sing praises to God; the promise of His coming is reason enough.

Gill writes,
"…the repetition of the phrase sing praises denotes frequency, constancy, fervency, and great devotion in the performance of this service.
No doubt we are amiss in our praises to God."

No doubt He is worthy of much more praise than we give Him.
