Isaiah
2:22 KJV
Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is
he to be accounted of?
Isaiah 2:22
"Cease ye from man"
What an interesting expression.
Our whole lives, it seems, are wrapped up in our relationships with man.
- Our work
- Our governments
- Our circles of influence
- Our families
Everything is built around and
in some way dependent upon our relationships with man. And here God tells us
that it must cease.
There are obviously other
things implied in the phrase that gives it meaning. I have discovered three
possible implications:
The man is anti Christ.
(Gill)
There is little doubt but that
Isaiah speaks volumes concerning him, whom no man should follow but so many
will.
The man is the proud and worldly mighty such as kings and princes.
(Barnes)
Isaiah himself looked to Uzziah
more than he ought to have.
The man is all in general and refers to placing trust in them.
(Clarke and Poole )
Though we relate to people
every day indeed, we must relate to them, we do not well to place our faith in
them. Neither
- Leaders, nor
- Employers nor even
- Our own family members
should be elevated in our lives
to places above our faith in the Lord.
I think we all know that but I
don't think we often practice it. We hide from our own selves the fact that our
true loyalties are to men and not to the Lord.
Cease from man.
