1 John 1:9 KJV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just
to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
The
blessing of the promise is in the "He is".
The focus
of the passage is not the "If we" (although we must confess) but in
the "He is".
- The key
- The joy and
- The liberty and
- The spiritual growth
is not in
having our eyes fixated on ourselves
- Did I confess sincerely enough?
- Did I confess with enough contrition?
- Did I turn from my sin completely enough?
The
failure of the sinful flesh will forever leave us with reason to doubt
ourselves. But we need never doubt God. "He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to
cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
