2 Samuel 23:1 KJV
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus , and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:
When a man nears the end of his days, certain things become priorities to him. No longer do money and material possessions matter so much to him. They have no use for the one who is about to leave them all.
- Finer foods
- Fancy furnishings
- Exciting activities
none of these have any impression upon the soul in our last days.
David found himself there. And in his last words, he expresses what those things most important are, in death and in life. Would to God we would out more of our emphasis on them in our youth.
God
David begins his last words with a message about God's place in his life. He has always trusted in the Lord. He hasn't always done the right thing but he has always returned to faith in God.
Friends and associates
We have a listing of those men whose lives most touched King David. If it had not been for them his legacy would be far different.
Family
Though they are not specifically mentioned (except in regards to their lack of faith) David certainly does not forget them. They will occupy almost all of what we will read in First and Second Kings.
Faith, friends, and family; these are what matter at the end of our course.
They ought to be what matter in the prime of our life.
