1 Timothy 6:9-11 KJV
But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
The difference in priorities of the worldly versus the godly is clearly seen in these few verses.
The worldly would be rich
The priority and focus of their life is on possessions and material things. It is temporal, appeals to the flesh and has no value but for the moment. Paul says to set these things as the priority of one's life is a snare which leads men to destruction. Ultimately they err from the faith.
The godly would flee such things
Paul urges us instead to pursue:
- Righteousness
- Godliness
- Faith
- Love
- Patience and
- Meekness
These are much different goals than those of the worldings and, though thought foolish by the world, will lead to much more positive fruit.
