God Has the Cure Prepared

Isaiah 66:7 KJV
Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.

Gill references a Rabbi as interpreting this passage meaning before General Titus, the man who finally sacked the city of Jerusalem in 70 AD, was born, the Messiah would be born. Most Jews, I presume, would reject that interpretation as it makes Jesus to be the Messiah, a thing still denied by the Jews.

In broader terms, before the one who would make the final stand against the Jews could organize, God would have already worked out the deliverance of the Jews.

An application for the New Testament believer, and a comforting one at that, is that:
  • Before we know we have a need, God has already prepared the fulfillment of the need
  • Before we call out in prayer, God has already sent us the answer
  • Before the enemy of our soul has planned his opposition, God has already mounted His forces in our favor.

The Jews did travail in pain. Jerusalem was sacked and left in ruins. But God had in fact already delivered on the chief promise of the Old Testament. The plan for the Jews’ eventual salvation had already been set in motion. The Messiah, though they did not recognize him at the time, had already come.

We too can expect opposition and travail under the attacks of the world, the flesh and the devil. This world has never been a friendly place for God's people. But we may also take courage knowing that, for whatever pain Satan may cause us, God has already prepared the cure.
