Hebrews 7:8 KJV
And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.
The point being made is the contrast between the priesthood of Melchisedec and that of the Levites, demonstrating the superiority of Melchisedec over Levitical; Melchisedec being a type of (if not a pre-incarnate appearance of) Christ.
That thing that struck me this morning was the contrast of receiving tithes "here" and "there". It would not be a huge stretch to make "there" a reference to heaven as Melchisedec is said to be without ending. And here gives us a thought worth pondering; when we tithe, it may appear to be received of men "here", but it is in fact received of the Lord "there".
Our tithe travels much farther than:
- From our wallet to the offering plate
- From the ushers to the accounting room
- From the accounting room to the bank
- From the bank to pay bills
On a worldly plane that may in fact happen, but in the world of the Spirit the tithe is collected and received up by Christ. We truly lay up treasures in heaven when we faithfully, cheerfully and bountifully tithe.
