Matthew 13:12
For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
A common phrase of a few years ago[1] was, "A little religion is a good thing."[2] The point was to say nothing bad about people of faith but to imply that such faith can go too far; a dash of religion can pleasantly season a person's life but too much will destroy it.
Many in the past destroyed their prospects of worldly wealth and power because they chose to have more than a little faith. William Borden, heir of the Borden milk company, gave up his role as leader of the wealthy business empire in order to be a missionary. Borden died of disease almost before he could begin a ministry where he believed he was called. A little religion, his family said, was fine. William Borden just took it to far.
Jesus sided with those like William Borden and against his family. Jesus said that a little faith wasn't nearly enough. To have only a little is to guarantee that the little you have will be lost. You can't hold on to a small bit of Christianity. It has to be enough to count and then in has to increase.
When I was in Bible College I heard a guy say, "If you're not green and growing you're ripe and rotting." That is essentially what Jesus said. If you have a little it will be taken from you and given to those who have much so they may have more.
If your Christianity isn't growing, take heed now and make it begin to nurture and increase it.
