Mark 8:18
Having eyes,
see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?
These are the words of Christ
spoken to His own disciples. Note the tenor of astonishment. Jesus knows all
things and would not be shocked and surprised as we are at things.
However, He often expresses Himself in these moods, knowing that they
help us relate to the lesson of His words.
These were His disciples.
They had seen His actions. They had heard His messages. Yet they still did not
grasp the depth of His lessons. They saw and heard. How was it then that they
did not understand?
If Christ was astonished at
their lack of understanding would we not do well to be concerned at our own?
· We hear sermons
· We see persons in Spiritual need
· We learn of what God has done in the lives of
others
How is it we haven't grown
more in our faith?
· We attend services week after week
· We speak to others about their own understanding
of God's Word
How is it our walk with
Christ has not improved?
· We teach a Sunday school class
· We pray for others to be born again
How is it we haven't improved
our witness? How is it that after more than 2000 years of Christianity and more
than 200 years of religious liberty in America we still have such anemic and
weak faith believers?
The passage doesn't give a
solution to the problem because none is needed. The answer stares us in the
face and screams in our ears.
· We need to take heed to what we see and hear
· We need to give attention to the doctrines
preached
· We need to apply these truths in daily obedience
to God and finally
· We need to exercise our faith that it may grow
thereby
