Acts 5:4 (KJV)
Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
When struggling against our sin nature it is reasonable to ask, “Why?”
- “Why do we wrestle so often with sin?”
- “Why, having the nature of Christ, do even we who are saved so frequently choose sin rather than righteousness?”
Ananias and Sapphira had no opportunity to repent and move forward in their spiritual life, but most of the time we do. It would help us to ask “Why?” when we sin.
I notice, however, that neither the offender nor the confronter offers an answer to the question. There is only the confrontation of the seriousness nature of their sin. They had lied, not to men but against God.
Our wrestle with the sin nature would be much more successful if:
- We focus on the One our sin truly offends
- We recognize that the consequences may be drastic and
- We realize that those consequences may be imposed much sooner than we suppose.
