Leviticus 5:1 (KJV)
And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.
And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.
Here is a dramatic demonstration of the powerful effects of the sin nature. It is almost a universal principle that we are not to be “snitches”. One could almost say that, even in polite society, the three things that are intolerable are:
- The liar
- The thief and
- The snitch
It makes sense, I suppose, among those in the realm of crime, to hold this in such esteem. What makes less sense, if you do not understand the sin nature, is that it would be valued among the “better classes” too. Truth is, the better classes are no better. They possess the very same sin nature as the criminal element. They have merely (and thankfully) been trained to subdue it, to restrain it, to limit it to less violent and brutal outbursts. They still possess it but they don’t want others to know it; hence, the value of those who won’t tell.
But God’s Word is clear. If you have witnessed a sin committed, or if you have personal knowledge of it, to not speak up makes you complicit to it.
Of course there are warnings in the Bible concerning the sin of gossip. The difference between the sin of gossip and the responsibility to tell what you know is this:
- You tell those who have authority to address the situation you have knowledge of
- You tell only those who have authority to address the situation you have knowledge of
- You tell those who have authority to address the situation you have knowledge of in order resolve the situation and not out of personal vendetta.
