2 Peter 2:10 (KJV) Liberty Under Government

2 Peter 2:10 (KJV)
But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
The term government refers to mastery or rule. It is any sort of organized authority.
  • Parental
  • Corporate (as in work)
  • Spiritual
We tend, I think, to equate the word to purely political. To do so in this instance would destroy the context. This passage is all about despising spiritual authority. It manifests itself in those people who claim to believe in God but not organized religion.
I spoke with a man this week who said I am a false teacher because I insist the Bible commands Christians to unite with a local church. He said that because the church is the people and not the building we can worship anywhere we want. He is exactly the person Peter speaks of. They demand liberty but are servants of corruption.
God organizes everything. He is a God of order. We would do best to find liberty under His government.
