2 Samuel 8:6 (KJV) Harmony in the Middle East

2 Samuel 8:6 (KJV)
Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.
I never see the city of Damascus, whether in Biblical references or modern ones, without going in my mind to the conversion of Saul on the road to that city. Christianity did not begin there, but it sure took one giant step forward that day on the road to Damascus.
David didn’t conquer the Syrians as in enveloping their part of the world into Israel. He did what America does so often; he put troops there. The presence of those soldiers gave Israel strategic power over other threats. It also reminded the Syrians of their “relationship” with Israel. I doubt that it was friendly, but it was certainly cooperative.
Syria has always been one of the most ever present thorns in Israel’s side. Spiritually, philosophically and politically they are and always have been as different as two bodies of people could be.
But in Paul’s day these differences were muted by the mutual oversight of the Romans.
The only way there will ever be true harmony in the Middle East is for God to rule it all through Jesus Christ.
