1 Kings 21:27-29 (KJV) The Power of Humility

1 Kings 21:27-29 (KJV)
And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house.
Note the power of humility.
Ahab may be the most evil king in Israel’s history. He certainly ranks among the most notorious. I dare say even the Kingdom’s original leader, Jeroboam, hasn’t the reputation of Ahab.
And here we see him in the midst of one of his most despicable acts. His coveting of another man’s property is so strong that he closes his eyes as his wicked wife, Jezebel, plots the false witness and assassination of the property’s God given owner. So terrible is this wickedness that the prophet pronounces upon him immediate judgment from God.
But then Ahab humbles Himself. Perhaps even he knew his wife went too far in this evil deed.
Notice:
  • He did not repent
  • He did not turn from evil
(We will see him once again to wickedly.) but
  • He did humble himself
And for that humility God granted a respite from the judgment.
I recommend repentance. I recommend a person trust Christ for salvation, turn from their wicked ways and dedicate themselves to faithful obedience to the Word of God.
But even when a sinner falls short of these minimum expectations of the faith they might see a small reprieve from the judgment of God if only they behave humbly.
