Luke 5:5 (KJV)
And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
Jesus was not an expert fisherman. Peter was. There would have been no earthly reason to obey Jesus. He had not proven Himself as having this wisdom. Peter and the others had not yet grown in faith enough to follow Christ without question.
So there was a question, “…we have toiled all night and have taken nothing.”
I can imagine that they were tired. They had landed their boats and were washing their nets. Jesus was asking them to do extra work. If they let down their nets now, they would have to wash and mend them again before they fished that night. More work – less sleep and, as far as they knew, no reward to show for it.
Nevertheless, at His word, they obeyed. Some would point out it was only half hearted obedience. They let down a net instead of their nets. But they did obey.
We learn almost daily, in our Christian life, that the Lord has something to say about things with which we have to do and about which it seems like our faith has little to do:
- Business
- Family
- Politics
- Life choices
How does the Bible, our church and its pastor, and the Lord presume authority in those areas? The lesson of the passage is to answer “Nevertheless, at thy word, I will obey.” Whenever we do, even if half-heartedly, we will be better off.
