John 3:18 (KJV)
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Some groups of professing Christians believe that, when we die, God holds up a scale and weighs our good deeds against our bad deeds. This, in their mind, is how it is determined whether we go to heaven or hell.

Other groups expect that none of us are good enough to go to heaven without some penance. In their minds almost all can get to heaven after a bit of time in purgatory, so long as they were members of their church.

The Bible record, and the testimony of Jesus Christ Himself, is much different. Jesus said we are condemned already. There will be no trial. There is no penance or purgatory that can burn away the remaining dross. If we have not believed upon Jesus Christ we are already condemned and awaiting judgment.

That’s the significance of salvation.

• It changes what is already fact. 
• It rescues us from prison. 
• It sets us free from our chains. 
• It justifies the condemned. 
• It overturns the sentence.
