Psalms 78:67-68 (KJV)
Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.

God operates on a level so unlike our own.

We tend to promote and advance people based on past performance. We see a man who has accomplished a thing and then assume his children and children’s children will do the same.

• It’s the principle behind royal families 
• It’s how money is distributed 
• It is often how we choose our leaders
• It is very often how military hierarchy is established 

The trouble is, we can never really know that a past performance will have any bearing on the future.

God chose much differently. Though Joseph was chosen of God to save Israel in a crisis, opening the door for them to enter Egypt; and though, because of it, two of the twelve tribes come from his loins, his family was not chosen for future greatness in Israel. Joseph was a godly, honorable and faithful man. But time proved his family to be otherwise. The tribes of Ephraim and Manassah aligned with the more rebellious tribes of Israel. The name Ephraim is often used to identify those rebels against the will of God.

Judah, on the other hand, was not such a grand example of godliness. His sin with his daughter in law in Genesis 38 and his complicity with the capture of Joseph you would have thought would have disqualified him from future greatness. But Jacob himself prophesied Judah’s family greatness and God chose out of Judah the family who would reign in Israel.

God chose after His own heart and not after heritage or performance.

We do our best when we seek His heart, not His favor by our works.
