Philippians 4:5 (KJV) Unrestrained Restraint

Philippians 4:5 (KJV)
Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

Strong’s Concordance gives as the primary definition of moderation, “appropriate.” Albert Barnes expands upon that, “The word “moderation” - refers to restraint on the passions, general soberness of living, being free from all excesses. The word properly means that which is fit or suitable, and then propriety….”

Barnes also says that this moderation must not be displayed in an ostentatious way. (That would certainly not be appropriate.) But I had this thought; a moderation that is known to all men is an “unrestrained restraint.” It is an immoderate moderation. It is moderation without concern that others recognize it. It is not possible to be inappropriately appropriate but it ought to be that a Christian’s Christianity is such an overwhelming part of who he or she is that those who are of the world think it is strange.

Don’t ever restrain your testimony so that people with no testimony are comfortable with your lack of testimony.
