Revelation 6:9-11 (KJV) Give Us Strength

Revelation 6:9-11 (KJV)
And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
As I write this we are in the beginning[1]of the Christmas season. Seems like every year the detractors come up with a new way to object to Christmas. It used to be just the Jehovah’s Witnesses and a few atheists. These days, groups abound who object. A couple of years ago the objection was the phrase “Merry Christmas.” Then it was Christmas trees in public places. This year the complaint is against the cartoon Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and the song “Baby It’s Cold Outside.[2]” What petty things people find to be offended by!
I’m thinking about the environment when John wrote the Revelation. He describes a complaint from those who had been slain for their faith. They wonder how long until their blood would be avenged. The answer was to rest until all their brethren that would be killed for their faith had died.
They were to rest knowing that still others were to die.
  • They did not object that God did not stop it
  • They did not protest the cruelty
  • They were to rest until God’s plan is fulfilled
What a soft day we live in. The things that bother us, the things that give us sleepless nights, pale in comparison to these times. Cruelty, oppression and death was such a reality that the people of that day could find rest in the fulfillment of the will of God even knowing that fulfillment would only come after further cruelty oppression and death.
God give us strength.

[1]Some would say the middle.
[2]As a Christian, this song has never been one of my favorites, but this year our whiney culture has chosen to make a thing of it.
