Jeremiah 13:11 (KJV) Don’t Hide in Worldiness

Jeremiah 13:11 (KJV)
For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.

In what was a common practice of God among the prophets, God used Jeremiah for an object lesson. He was to:

• Put on a girdle
• Not wash it
• Hide it in a while of a rock

And then after many days

• Recover the girdle and examine it. 

The girdle, Jeremiah testifies, was so marred that it was good for nothing. 

God then says that Israel and Judah are like the girdle. 

They were given the chance to cleave to God, to be clean and holy and useful. They would not. They hid themselves in the things of the world. They refused to be cleansed in the righteousness of God. Consequently God’s judgment was that they were: 

• Marred, 
• Spoiled and 
• Profitable for nothing 

In the New Testament He turned His attention to the Gentiles. 

• May we, who claim the name of Christ, not make the same choices Israel and Judah did. 
• May we not hide ourselves in worldliness. 
• May we ever come to the washing of water by the Word.
