Luke 3:38 (KJV)
Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.
Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.
The genealogy is of Jesus Christ[1]but truly reflects what is true of us all. Adam was not born of God, but he was begotten of God. His life was generated by the very life of God. Every son of man receives life from his parents who received it first from God.
The King James Version adds the italics throughout the chapter to demonstrate that the words, “the son” were added by the translators for clarity. I appreciate their candor and hold it to be an evidence of the supernatural character of this translation. The translators were not inspired as the original writers were but I do believe they were illuminated by the Spirit in order to preserve God’s Word infallible and accurate in every word. That said, it can be helpful to read this chapter, “Joseph which was of Heli, which was of Matthat, which was of LEVI, etc., which was of God.”
Jesus, of course, is uniquely of God. But it would be appropriate and helpful to think of ourselves as “of God.”
Acts 17:28
For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
We are all that we are because of God.
[1]It is important to note those words, “as was supposed.”
