Lamentations 4:1-2 (KJV)
How is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street.
The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!

What an interesting passage. God mourns the destruction of the Temple, describing its stones as poured out in every street. He then likens the sons of Zion to those stones.
The Temple was thrown down, we know, stone after stone. Every piece of gold and other precious substance was stripped from them as the miner would work his claim until there was nothing left. I tend to picture it like a heap of stones without order strewn one next to the other. God describes them as poured out in every street. They weren’t stacked. They weren’t piled in the heap. They were scattered and dispersed everywhere.
So too, the sons of Zion, as valuable as gold in the sight of God, were scattered. They were not simply piled in a heap in Babylon but, before it was over (and perhaps it is not over yet) they were dispersed like gold dust about the world. Where in the world would we not find a small remnant of Jews? I imagine that, even in the most anti-Semitic places, there is some small dusting of these precious sons of Zion.
The world sees them as earthen disposable fragments of clay.
God sees them as gold.
