Ezekiel 26:7 (KJV) King of Kings

Ezekiel 26:7 (KJV)
For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will bring upon Tyrus Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, a king of kings, from the north, with horses, and with chariots, and with horsemen, and companies, and much people.
I was struck by the phrase, “king of kings.” This term is used three times in the Old Testament. Each time it refers to one of the kings of Babylon. It’s the first of the four great empires of Daniel’s vision and, as such, none of those after it rival it. As much as Alexander the Great may have aspired to it, He never reached the greatness of the Babylonian kings, especially Nebuchadnezzar.
My real interest, however, is in the contrast between this and a similar New Testament phrase. The Bible gives Jesus a title similar to that of Nebuchadnezzar:
1 Timothy 6:15
Which in his times he shall shew, who isthe blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
Revelation 17:14
These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him arecalled, and chosen, and faithful.
Revelation 19:16
And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
The differences between the Old Testament title and the New Testament one may seem subtle, but they are of unbelievable importance. Nebuchadnezzar seemed like a king of kings. He might have been a king among kings. He could have been the most powerful of the kings of his day.
But Jesus is King of kings and KING OF KINGS.
He is the God of all kings, the authority of every king.
  • Every king[1]ought to aspire to His character.
  • Every king ought to submit to His authority.
  • Every king ought to bow before His presence.
But no king will ever replace Him, defeat Him or compare to Him.

[1]Or, for that matter, any leader of any title or office.
