Hebrews 4:1 (KJV)
Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
Gill writes of this passage, “the sense is, that though true believers shall not come short of that, yet they may “seem” to others to do so; and therefore should be careful of their lives and conversations …”
The rest of the believer is an eternal one. It is that rest that is ours when we get to heaven. Today is a day to work, to serve the Lord. However, because we know we possess this rest, it should change how we view our labor.
- We work knowing our work is rewarded
- We work knowing our work has an end
- We work knowing that we are yoked with Christ and our work is easy and burden light
- We work knowing that we are free to come to the throne of grace to find mercy and grace to help in time of need.
A Christian seems to come short of that rest when he either shirks the work or does it under a great burden. If he does not go to that throne of grace, he will sure seem to come short of rest.
