1 Thessalonians 3:1 (KJV)
Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone;

1 Thessalonians 3:5 (KJV)
For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.
For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.
The Apostle said twice, “when I could no longer forebear.”
That tells me he did forebear for a season
For whatever reason, he did not send to know their faith at his first impulse. He waited. He held off. He endured what he would rather have not for some time.

But then he could forebear no longer
Because we are looking into the inspired Word of God, I do not believe either his waiting or his finally sending of Timothy were of emotion or the flesh. This was the leading of the Holy Spirit.

That which he could no longer forbear
Was to see their face and more specifically to perfect that which was lacking in their faith.
Was to see their face and more specifically to perfect that which was lacking in their faith.
- He wanted to see them (either personally or through a representative).
- He knew that the perfecting of their faith required contact (either personally or through a representative)
We face this same today. The COVID19 virus has left us separated for a time. We have been willing to forebear, to use technological means to attempt to minister to others. But we have about reached the end of this forbearance. We will of necessity have to find some means of real contact if we are to “perfect that which is lacking” in the faith of our congregation.
