Psalms 77:7-9 (KJV)
Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?
Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.

Of what calamity this Psalm speaks, we will not know until we reach eternity. What I am struck with is that such calamities are so frequent: in the Bible, in history, and in life in general that they cannot all be identified. This one was especially difficult. The Psalmist mused in his heart and, at the same moment, cried out to God, “Will the Lord cast off for ever?”

• They had known the presence of God.  Not now.
• They had experienced His blessing and favor. No more.
• God had given them mercy. No longer

His promises seemed now to fail. His grace seemed to have ended. It now felt as if all they could know was the anger of the Lord.

I do not know the occasion or the severity of this distress so I cannot say how it compares to the one that we now face. I imagine that the Psalmist’s trouble would make ours seem as nothing. What I am certain of is that it did not last forever. Since the time of this writing:

• Men have known the presence of God
• Men have experienced His blessing and favor
• Men have been granted mercy
• Men have enjoyed the grace of God and
• Men have lived without fear of the anger of God

We have come to a time of distress and trial. Just today I learned that our state’s governor presumes to develop “guidance” for church assemblies. This is a huge step over the Baptist, and very biblical, doctrine of separation of church and state. If America has ever known the blessing and favor of God, it sure feels as if it has been cast off now. 

But this will pass. 

Our place today is to turn to the Lord as perhaps we have never done before. We cannot take for granted that we have freedom of worship. We cannot take for granted that we have the privilege of public assembly. We cannot take God for granted another day. The people of God must turn to God.

And pray for “a little reviving.”[1]
