1 Peter 1:3-6 (KJV)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
I doubt that many in the United States especially, probably all of the Western World, can understand the trials the believers of the first sixteen centuries endured. There was no way out of them, little possibility of escaping them. Life on this planet was filled with “manifold temptations”.
The Word of God offered them hope.
It was a lively hope because it was based upon the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It had substance, meat. They were sure that, because Jesus rose and promised they too would rise, there was a better life beyond this.
The Word of God promised them an inheritance.
One that made anything the rich and powerful of this world had to pale. Incorruptible, undefiled, and permanent.
The Word of God gave them security.
This hope and this inheritance were kept for them by the power of God.
The Word of God caused them to rejoice.
This was a happy hope despite the manifold temptations.
Our day has experienced such ease and success that it is difficult for most to fully comprehend this passage.
I am thankful for that hope that is Jesus Christ.
