Revelation 8:1 (KJV)
And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.

Today is the Fourth of July, Independence Day here in the US. Our heavens will not be silent tonight. Indeed, they have not been for many nights lately. My neighbor has a tradition of getting out of town to camp over the Fourth. She isn’t celebrating, she is escaping. The noise in the heavens is too much for her. Others express the same frustration. They are thankful for our country, but they think these celebrations with fireworks are too much. 

Perhaps they are. 

John Adams said that the day should be celebrated this way. It’s about the only monument that bears his name. I am not quick to give it up.

But I notice the silence in heaven. 

There is something to be said for absolute silence. It is a healthy thing especially in our busy world today, to be set aside some time to be still and know that God is God. 

I understand that this passage isn’t a command, but it could be a prescription. I recommend believers everywhere have about half an hour, thirty minutes per day, of silence.
