Jeremiah 22:29 (KJV)
O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the LORD.
There is a context for this plea, but I will leave it to the reader to do your own study of that.
Hebrew expression frequently uses repetition to emphasize a thing, to make it stand out, to demonstrate its importance. By repeating the word, earth, three times the prophet is making it clear how important it is to hear the Word of the LORD.
Could there be anything more important?
I am thinking today that Jeremiah did not say,
- Israel
- Judah
- Jerusalem
He said, earth.
I am reminded that the Word of the LORD is for all mankind. I think the thrice-repeated word, “earth, earth, earth” ought to be understood as the uttermost parts of the earth.
- The East
- The Middle East and
- The West
May I press the passage a bit?
- Washington, DC
- Houston, TX
- Olympia, WA
and all points in between, “hear the word of the LORD.”
