Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
The language of the two on the road suggests that they were close disciples but not of the eleven. The Bible says of them that, as they walked,
Their eyes were holden that they should not know Him
I do not think this is that God would not let them know Him. I think it is the nature of man that we get so focused on other things that we cannot see Him. This is true of Christians as well as unbelievers.
They were slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken
This too is true of believers as well as unbelievers. We who are
Christians spend a great deal of time learning the Bible. (At least more time than others do.) This does not mean we believe it, or trust it, or act upon it. It is one of the greatest troubles of our world, I think, that the very people we trust to teach us the Bible so often are “slow of heart” to believe the Bible.
It was the teaching of Jesus Himself that finally opened their eyes.
May we have the teaching of Jesus Himself today.
